Bethany Beach
Bethany Beach was founded in the early 1900's by members of the Christian Church (also known as Disciples of Christ) of the Washington DC area and Pennsylvania. Bethany was named by H.L. Atkinson who won a nationwide contest. He was given a lot on the beach as his prize. Bethany still reflects the character of the early settlers who were looking for "a haven of rest for quiet people."
Bethany Beach is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the inland bays in the southeastern corner of Sussex County. The Bethany has miles of pristine beaches as well as an endless variety of restaurants, shops, and recreational activities.
